Penn Hills Service Association

History
Penn Hills Service Association (PHSA) is comprised of concerned citizens and organizations in Penn Hills. Originally founded in 1949 as the Penn Hills Service Committee, it was incorporated in 1962 as the Penn Hills Service Association and has been addressing vital community needs since its inception. PHSA serves our community by helping over 5,500 individuals each year in the three main areas of: Food, Clothing, Convalescent Aids, and Holiday Help.

PHSA Purpose
To provide aid and service to any needy people in Penn Hills regardless of race, color, creed, or religion. Emergencies and tragedies occur leaving families with little or no money for food or clothing. The needs of the community exceed our ability to meet all challenges. We share all we have.

Food
Food Hotline: 412-798-2711
Thanks to the generosity of the good people of Penn Hills, we have one of the finest food pantries in the area with a generous assortment of canned and staple goods.

We have served thousands of Penn Hills families since 1959. Recipients are screened through the hotline and receive food once per month by appointment. Qualified recipients include people who are disabled, unemployed, single parents, on welfare, or living on a small pension or low income.

After acceptance into the program, individuals must call the hotline each month and leave a message. A volunteer will then set up an appointment.

Clothing
Clothing Hotline: 412-798-9449
Penn Hills residents donate clothing and household items. Volunteers sort, size, stock, and display the items. PHSA invites member families to come twice a year, by appointment, to select clothing for each season.

Depending on the available supply, each person may choose coats, jackets, sweaters, slacks, skirts, dresses, shirts, undergarments, socks, and shoes. PHSA purchases certain new items such as undergarments and socks (for school age children). The clothing volunteers work many Wednesdays aiding families numbering 20-30 people each time.

Clean, gently used clothing and household goods are accepted on Thursdays from 8:00 AM to 11:30 AM. Please enter through the side loading dock door.

Convalescent Aids
Hotline: 412-798-9499
A most important function is the lending of convalescent supplies to any person in Penn Hills who expresses a need of them.

Items available include: rollators, bedside toilets, crab canes, wheelchairs, walkers, transport chairs, crutches, and many other items. There is no charge for borrowing the equipment, but monetary donations are helpful to purchase new equipment and to help keep existing items in good repair. Equipment is loaned for a 6 month period.

Numerous volunteers help PHSA serve the community in this area of need. Please phone the center to make sure volunteers are present before you arrive.

Convalescent Department Days and Times
Mondays: 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM
Thursdays 8:30 AM to 11:00 AM

Holidays
The PHSA conducts holiday programs, helping nearly 100 members’ families by providing food, gifts, and gift cards. This is truly a commuity effort that depends on the generosity of local churches, schools, scouts, individuals, and businesses who donate food and gifts.

The KDKA Turkey Fund often supplies gift cards for Thanksgiving and Turner’s Dairy, which donates a unique product every month, will usually provide eggnog at Christmas time, The PHSA sends gift cards to each child under 18 to families in our food program.

The number of people in each family determines the quantity of food and gifts they receive.

All days and times are subject to weather conditions and volunteer availability. Call before you come.
